Quick answer

Telegram is unusually strong for cloud files, huge organised groups, channels, scheduled messages, polls and cross-device history. It is not the automatic winner for confidential chats: ordinary Telegram cloud chats are not end-to-end encrypted by default, while WhatsApp and Viber private chats are.

Fact-checked

The great Maldivian chat-app trial

Telegram is what happens when a chat app refuses to remain just a chat app.

WhatsApp is a room. Viber is a room with excellent stickers. Telegram looked at the room and quietly added a filing cabinet, radio station, planner, cinema and robot workshop.

No sponsorship. No affiliate link. No request to abandon the family Viber group before your mother approves.

The best messaging app is the one that solves your actual mess.

If your digital life consists of “Where is that PDF?”, “Who changed the meeting?”, “Please stop replying to the announcement” and “Can somebody resend the photo without turning it into six pixels?”, Telegram deserves an audition.

That is especially true in Maldives. Families are split between islands and Malé. Teams move between phones, office computers and tablets. Clubs, schools, island associations and small businesses need both conversation and broadcasting. A tool that keeps history in the cloud, handles large files and separates chatter from information can be more than another icon on a phone.

*The science begins below. The opening statement contains trace amounts of drama.

Is Telegram actually for you?

Answer six questions. This quiz sends nothing anywhere; it is merely judging you locally.

1. Do you move files between your phone and computer?
2. Does one group mix announcements, jokes, polls and 47 good-morning flowers?
3. Have you searched a chat for a receipt, schedule or address?
4. Do you run a club, class, business, project or island group?
5. Would scheduled messages or reminders save you from your own memory?
6. Is default end-to-end encryption more important than cloud convenience?

Awaiting evidence

Your thumbs have not testified yet.

Answer all six. We promise not to tell Viber.

Do not believe the feature list. Make it perform.

Every reason below comes with a tiny experiment. If Telegram does not improve that task, keep doing it your way. Apps are tools, not football clubs.

01 The suitcase

Your chat becomes a personal cloud conveyor belt.

Telegram lets free users send files of any type up to 2 GB each; Premium raises the per-file limit to 4 GB. Cloud chats and Saved Messages are available across your devices.

The honest footnote: WhatsApp also allows documents up to 2 GB, so Telegram does not win the free-size contest by knockout. It wins when the file is part of a searchable cloud workflow rather than a one-off transfer.

Try this in real Telegram

  1. Send a non-sensitive PDF or video to Saved Messages.
  2. Open Telegram Desktop or Web.
  3. Search for its filename and download it.

If you did not email yourself, plug in a cable or whisper “where did it go?”, award Telegram one point.

Official limits: Telegram and WhatsApp.

Tap to relay a file

The PDF is waiting patiently on the phone.

02 The small nation

A busy group can have rooms inside the room.

Telegram private groups can hold up to 200,000 members. Topics split a group into separate conversations; admins can pin information, set permissions and run polls. A Telegram poll can offer up to 12 options.

For perspective, WhatsApp’s official group limit is 1,024. Viber’s ordinary groups and its large Communities are different products: Viber says Communities can scale as high as one billion members. Telegram’s advantage is not “the largest number ever printed”; it is the combination of a very large interactive group with topics and familiar chat tools.

Try this

Create a private test group. Turn on Topics, then make Announcements, Transport, Food and Uncle’s Flowers. Pin one message and run one poll.

Check: Telegram FAQ, Telegram polls, WhatsApp groups, and Viber groups and Communities.

Sort the group chaos

Tap a message to give it a topic.

Chaos level: proudly Maldivian.

03 The second brain

Saved Messages is the chat where the other person finally understands you.

The other person is you. Save a receipt, voice note, location, draft, photograph or document and find it later from another device. Telegram also lets you organise chats into folders, so work does not have to sit beside family chatter and a channel about football transfers.

Viber has My Notes too; this is not magic patented by Telegram. The question is which version feels quicker to capture, search and reopen on every device you use.

The 30-second search test

Save three items with memorable words—“rent”, “ferry”, “passport”. Close the app, reopen it and find “ferry”. Repeat in your current app’s notes-to-self feature. Use a stopwatch, not loyalty.

Check: Telegram Saved Messages and Viber My Notes.

Search your pretend second brain

  • Rent receipt · August.pdf
  • Ferry schedule · Hulhumalé
  • Passport renewal checklist

04 The time machine

Messages can arrive when they are useful, not when you remember them.

Telegram supports scheduled messages. In Saved Messages, a scheduled message becomes a reminder. You can also send without sound when the information matters but the 2:13 a.m. notification does not.

This is the rare feature that makes you appear more organised without requiring you to become more organised.

Try this tonight

Write “Take the document before leaving” in Saved Messages, long-press Send, choose Set a Reminder, and schedule it for tomorrow morning. Your future self may file a positive performance review.

Check: scheduled messages and reminders and silent or scheduled sending.

Schedule the reminder

Future you is currently unprotected.

05 The radio station

Conversation and broadcasting do not have to be the same noisy thing.

Telegram Channels are built for broadcasting to unlimited audiences. A school, shop, sports club, island association or public-information project can publish one clear stream; discussion can live somewhere else.

WhatsApp and Viber also have broadcast-style products. Telegram’s appeal is how naturally channels connect with groups, polls, files, public links and bots. Start privately while you learn—public broadcasting carries responsibility.

The no-reply-all experiment

Create a private channel called “Test Announcements”. Add one trusted friend. Post an update, attach a poll, then compare the result with an ordinary group where every “noted” becomes a new notification.

Check: Telegram’s FAQ on groups and channels and Viber’s own comparison.

Send one clean announcement

📣 “Beach clean-up starts at 06:30.”

Nine people are blissfully unaware.

06 The front door

A username can open a conversation without putting your phone number on the poster.

Telegram usernames and t.me links let people find and contact you without knowing your phone number. Your number’s visibility still depends on your privacy settings, so inspect those settings before publishing a link.

This is useful for a public project, customer enquiries, a club or an event. It is not an invitation to make your entire private life searchable. A door can be convenient and still need a lock.

Privacy test before username test

  1. Open Settings → Privacy and Security → Phone Number.
  2. Choose who can see it and who can find you by it.
  3. Enable two-step verification and review active sessions.
  4. Only then decide whether you want a public username.

Check: Telegram’s username explanation and phone-number controls.

Winner for the whole workflow: Telegram

Telegram

2 GB free / 4 GB Premium

Any file type, Saved Messages and cloud access across devices.

WhatsApp

2 GB documents

A genuine tie on the free document limit. Telegram’s advantage is the cloud filing workflow.

Viber

My Notes exists

Useful for self-notes, but backup and secondary-device history rules are less simple.

Who should not move everything to Telegram?

People who need default E2EE in every private chat.

Telegram’s normal cloud-chat model is not that. WhatsApp or Viber may be the simpler default.

People whose essential contacts will not move.

A perfect empty app is still an empty app. Keep the old one while the useful groups migrate.

People who install random bots without thinking.

A bot can see what you send to it. Treat third-party bots like third-party services, because that is what they are.

Yes, everyone should try Telegram. No, everyone should not blindly delete everything else.

Use Telegram where it is plainly better: moving and finding files, organising active groups, publishing channels, running polls, scheduling messages and keeping cloud history available across devices.

Keep WhatsApp or Viber where default end-to-end encryption, existing contacts or a settled family habit matters more. Then move one useful group at a time. People do not switch because of a manifesto. They switch because Tuesday’s ferry schedule was finally easy to find.
