How Much Does It Take to Live in Malé and the Islands?
The Maldives salary test
How much does it take to live in Malé—and in the islands?
MVR 12,000 can feel manageable on one island and impossible in another household. Compare five salaries, two very different realities and your own monthly costs.
A salary number means very little until you know where—and with whom—someone lives.
Someone earning MVR 12,000 while living in a family home on an island may contribute to the household, cover daily expenses and save a little. Someone earning the same amount after moving to Greater Malé may spend more than half of it on one room.
But a lower housing cost does not prove that every other part of island life is cheaper. Transport, medical travel and access to services vary by island. This article therefore does not invent a single “island average” for 2026.
The 2026 pressure
Food and transport are rising fastest
In June 2026, the Maldives Bureau of Statistics recorded food and beverage prices 7.28% higher than a year earlier. Transport was up 8.05%. These are national category movements; they do not prove that every household or island experienced the same increase.

Greater Malé charges more for space. Islands can charge more for access.
The housing problem
Examples visible in June–August 2026 included rooms advertised at MVR 5,000–9,000, one-room units at MVR 10,000–14,000, a two-bedroom Malé apartment at MVR 18,000, and larger apartments at MVR 20,000–28,000. These are selected asking prices—not a market average.
The access problem
The last completed national household survey reported much lower average rent outside Malé, alongside lower average income. Current costs can vary sharply by island, and the official 2026 household survey results have not yet been released.
Listing evidence: MVR 5,000 room; visible room and unit listings; MVR 18,000 Malé apartment; MVR 20,000 one-bedroom example; and MVR 28,000 Hulhumalé example.
The last completed Household Income and Expenditure Survey, from 2019, found a major gap: reported average rent among renting households was MVR 13,494 in Malé and MVR 2,668 in the islands. Its income results also showed lower average income per person in the atolls. These figures are historical context—not 2026 prices. Fieldwork for HIES 2026 is underway, so a defensible current nationwide household-cost average is not yet available.

Five salary ranges
What can your salary realistically cover?
This table is arithmetic, not a claim that everybody should spend these amounts. It applies two declared example budgets: MVR 11,500 for an island resident with low housing cost, and MVR 15,000 for a Greater Malé resident renting a room. Both assume one adult, no children and no major debt. The exact components appear in the comparison immediately below.

Every number in these two cards is a chosen, editable assumption. The only conclusion they establish is mathematical: under these inputs, the remainders are MVR 6,500 and MVR 3,000. They do not establish an average cost for all island or Malé households.

How much does it take?
The evidence does not support one exact 2026 number for every island and household. What it supports is a method: add the household’s actual housing, food, utilities, daily transport, inter-island travel, debt, dependants and emergency allowance. The required take-home income is at least that total; financial breathing room requires more.
Under the two explicit examples in this article, monthly costs are MVR 11,500 with low-cost island housing and MVR 15,000 with a room in Greater Malé. The “renting alone” calculator preset totals MVR 23,000. Change the inputs and the answer changes immediately.
The real measure of a salary is not whether it reaches the end of a normal month. It is whether one unexpected expense destroys the month.
